Description

This book is the story of East Lake and its rebirth in 1993. In the young city of Atlanta, it is an old story. That history is reviewed at the beginning, but the focus changes quickly from the place to the people who made it famous, Alexa Stirling and Bobby Jones. Alexa wrote the chapter on her younger friend. She emphasized how his mastery of himself opened the door to his success.

The story begins in 1904, only 67 years after the city was founded. One of the first clubs in the new town, the Atlanta Athletic Club in the heart of downtown, bought land for a golf course. The club occupied a masterpiece of a building that had floors dedicated to social and dining facilities, swimming, indoor racquet sports, and basketball, but the land and lake at the end of the streetcar line changed everything.

This second edition introduces the new golf course with stunning drone photography of Eric Schiller and Jon Lothner and has new chapters on Tom Cousins and Gary Player. The memories of four new college students are included. They spent their evenings with Bobby Jones in the last years of his life. The impact on their lives when he was totally dependent on others was his finest hour. It is the best Bobby Jones story of all.

I have read nearly every book written by and about Bobby Jones. None contain much information about him as a man or about his personal life. He was a very private person. But Dr. Hopkins, through his research and contact with people who knew Bobby Jones personally, presents a side of this great man never seen before. The additional information on Alexa Stirling Fraser and her relationship with Bobby Jones documents an important part of this history. If you are a Bobby Jones fan, you will love reading about his home course and his friendships in Dr. Hopkins’ book.
